HIPAA Compliance

HIPAA: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.

The part of the act that relates to data destruction is Title II, AS for ‘Administrative Simplification’ provisions.

The AS provisions specifically address the privacy of the health data and are designed to increase the efficiency of the United States Healthcare system by encouraging electronic data interchange between agencies.

The AS provisions require the establishment of nationwide standards for electronic healthcare transactions.

As part of the provisions health related companies must document privacy procedures and designate a privacy officer and train employees on the handling of private data.

Document disposal businesses catering to the Healthcare industry may have to comply with HIPAA requirements.
