The Review from ForewordReviews.com

Total Quality in Provider Practices Receives 5 Stars from ForewordReviews.com

Created by authors Daniel Farb, M.D. and Bruce Gordon who offer an impressive list of credentials, this CD and guidebook provide a detailed, comprehensive resource for the learning and application of Total Quality Management (TQM) in the health care arena.

The CD contains more than 1,400 slides in four sections. The first three are teaching sections divided into modules, most concluding with a brief quiz. The fourth section is designed to assist an organization to prepare for and create its own TQM program.

The first section contains an overview of TQM and Six Sigma. In addition to a brief history of these concepts and their importance, the CD provides a thorough glossary of terms, basic statistics information, and specific tools for measuring quality. The CD explains each concept in a user-friendly, interactive format, while providing screen shots and voice overs on creating spreadsheets that measure statistics, like calculating averages and creating charts. These samples are well done, providing clear explanations of how to create and use each type.

In the second section, the CD covers TQM in provider practices as well as overcoming quality barriers in health care. Of particular interest are the case studies, which give the user the opportunity to identify and cite potential problems. In addition, the CD explains that TQM is not taught in college, and that health care providers usually learn this concept during its practical application. In the “Human Resources in TQM” module, users learn the importance of establishing criteria to create standards, the need for a blend of different personality types in an organization, and communicating clear expectations for job responsibilities and quality standards.

The third section discusses the importance of informed consent, scheduling and follow-up, patient compliance, and collections. Through each of these business facets, the TQM concept is emphasized while suggestions and examples are offered for each. For example, in the “Informed Consent” modules, videos are presented discussing the incidence of malpractice and how appropriate informed consent practices can reduce lawsuits.

The fourth section offers a series of electronic workbooks, which help health care workers from the top down to apply these TQM concepts, and to develop their own programs. In the “Quality Improvement Preparation” module, for example, users are asked to identify their business needs and objectives. It asks users to reflect on their company’s focus on customers, communication efforts, and current improvement programs.

This CD set and accompanying textbook provide a wealth of TQM information as it applies to health care organizations. While there is a significant amount of information to be digested, the CD presents it in an interesting, interactive way designed to hold a user’s interest. It provides real life examples, opportunities for discussion and reflection, as well as testing to ensure retention. It is an excellent tool to assist any health care organization to understand and tailor TQM concepts to suit its specific needs.
